Door Entry FAQs

Will my door entry system work without the internet?

Yes. UniFi Access operates locally through your UniFi Console, so the system continues to function even if your internet connection goes down. Doors will still unlock and authorised users can still gain access. Internet is only required for remote management or making changes from outside the network.

Do I need a UniFi Console for UniFi Access to work?

Yes. UniFi Access requires a UniFi Console capable of running the Access application (e.g., UDM-SE, UDM-Pro, UDR, UNVR-Pro). This ensures fast, local processing and reliable access control with no ongoing subscription fees.

Is UniFi Access compatible with my existing door lock?

In most cases, yes. UniFi Access works with most magnetic locks, electric strikes, latch locks, and door sensors. We will check your existing hardware during our survey to confirm compatibility.

Can I have multiple doors controlled by one system?

Yes. UniFi Access can scale from a single door up to a full multi-door environment. You can manage all access points from the same console, with permissions customised per user or department

How are user permissions managed?

Permissions are managed in the UniFi Access app. You can add users, assign cards or badges, set schedules, restrict certain doors, or instantly revoke access. Everything is handled through a clean, easy-to-use interface.

Can I use my phone to open the door?

Yes. UniFi Access supports mobile unlocking in two ways:
  • UniFi Access App – authorised users can unlock supported doors directly from the app.
  • Apple Touch Pass – iPhone users can add their access credentials to Apple Wallet and tap their phone (or Apple Watch) on the reader, similar to Apple Pay.
Each UniFi Console includes 10 free Apple Touch Pass licences for one year. After that, additional licences incur a small annual fee of around £5–£6 per user, which is charged by Apple, not Ubiquiti.
Card readers and key fobs are also fully supported.

Is there a monthly fee for UniFi Access?

For most installations, no. UniFi Access is designed to run locally on your UniFi Console with no ongoing subscription costs.
There are only two situations where subscriptions may apply:
  1. Apple Touch Pass – If you want to use Apple Wallet tap-to-unlock, Apple provides 10 free licences for the first year. After that, Apple charges around £5–£6 per user per year (this fee is charged by Apple, not Ubiquiti).
  2. Multi-site shared credentials – If you need the same access cards or fobs to work across multiple separate business sites, Ubiquiti offers an Enterprise Identity subscription to enable this functionality.
For typical single-site installations, there are no subscriptions at all, and most customers never need any paid add-ons.

Does the system record video or audio like an intercom?

Yes. Many of the latest UniFi Access devices include built-in cameras, allowing them to record video of door events directly through the system. For installations using non-camera Access readers, these can be paired with a nearby UniFi Protect camera to provide visual monitoring of who is entering.

Can UniFi Access be used alongside UniFi Networking and CCTV systems?

Absolutely. UniFi Access integrates perfectly with UniFi Network, UniFi Protect, and UniFi Talk, making it an ideal choice for businesses already using Ubiquiti products. This ensures a seamless ecosystem where your networking, CCTV, door entry, and phone systems all operate cleanly under one platform.

What happens if there is a power cut?

If your system is connected to a UPS (recommended), door controllers and readers will continue to operate. Without backup power, magnetic locks typically fail-safe (unlock) and electric strikes typically fail-secure (remain locked), depending on your hardware. We can advise on the best setup for your building.

Can the system track who has entered and when?

Yes — when users unlock a door using a UniFi Access reader (card, fob, mobile app, or Apple Touch Pass), the system logs exactly who entered and at what time. If the reader or device has a camera, it can also record video of each unlock event for added verification.
However, actions such as using a push-to-exit button or other manual release methods do not identify who opened the door, as the system cannot link a button press to a specific user. These events are still logged as door openings, but without user attribution.
This provides a clear and reliable audit trail wherever access is authenticated through UniFi readers.
