Fibre Optic Cable Installation & Splicing

At Home Network Solutions Berkshire, we provide professional fibre optic installation and splicing services for both homes and businesses. Using our own precision fusion splicer, we can install, terminate and test single-mode and multi-mode fibre cabling to deliver ultra-fast, reliable connections across your property or network.
Whether you need to link buildings on a large estate, connect outbuildings and garden offices, or create high-speed backbone connections between network cabinets, our fibre solutions provide the performance and reliability copper cabling simply can’t match.
Unlike traditional copper Ethernet, which is limited to around 100 metres, fibre optic cabling can transmit data over hundreds of metres or even several kilometres without signal loss — making it ideal for linking distant buildings or larger sites.

Domestic Fibre Installation

Many modern properties require fibre links between main houses, outbuildings, or gate systems. We install external-grade fibre cabling that’s weather-resistant, durable, and designed for long-term performance. Fibre is the ideal way to extend your UniFi Network between buildings without signal loss or interference — perfect for maintaining high-speed WiFi and CCTV connectivity across larger properties.

Commercial & Office Fibre Solutions

For businesses and commercial properties, we design and install fibre backbones between comms rooms, network racks, or multiple buildings. Our fibre installations support 10 Gbps and 25 Gbps links, ideal for Ubiquiti aggregation or distribution switches. Each link is fully tested, labelled, and documented as part of your network infrastructure.

Fibre Optic Installation FAQs

Can you repair or extend my Internet Provider’s fibre line?

No — we cannot work on or modify any Internet Service Provider (ISP) fibre lines, including Openreach, Virgin, or other broadband providers. These external cables remain the property and responsibility of your ISP and must be repaired or replaced by them directly.

However, we can extend your internal connection by running a new data line from your ISP’s ONT or modem to another location within your property. This allows you to relocate your router, network cabinet, or equipment rack without altering the ISP’s fibre itself.

How far can fibre optic cable run compared to copper?

Traditional copper Ethernet cables (Cat6/Cat6a) are limited to around 100 metres before performance begins to drop. Fibre optic cabling can transmit data over hundreds of metres or even several kilometres without signal loss — making it ideal for linking outbuildings, gates, or separate offices on the same site.

Can fibre be used between garden offices or outbuildings?

Yes. Fibre is the perfect solution for connecting outbuildings, garden offices, and annexes where WiFi or standard Ethernet won’t reach. It’s immune to interference, weather-resistant when correctly installed, and delivers full-speed connectivity regardless of distance.

What’s the difference between single-mode and multi-mode fibre?

  • Single-mode fibre (OS1/OS2) is typically used for long-distance runs and supports extremely high bandwidth over hundreds of metres or kilometres.
  • Multi-mode fibre (OM3/OM4) is designed for shorter internal links, often within commercial buildings or data cabinets.
We’ll recommend the right type based on your site layout and hardware.

Can you install fibre between different buildings on our property?

Absolutely. We regularly install external-grade fibre between homes, garden offices, barns, and commercial buildings. We’ll plan the route, install protective conduit where required, and fusion-splice the terminations for a professional finish.

Do I need a special switch or hardware for fibre?

Not always. Most Ubiquiti UniFi switches include SFP or SFP+ ports, which allow direct fibre connections using the appropriate modules. However, if your existing network switch doesn’t have SFP ports and you only need a single fibre link, we can use media converters to bridge the connection between fibre and standard Ethernet.

This approach keeps costs down while still delivering the full benefit of high-speed, interference-free fibre connectivity.

Do you test and certify the fibre once it’s installed?

Yes. Every fibre link we install is tested, labelled, and documented using professional test equipment. We record all results for your handover documentation.

Is fibre installation suitable for homes as well as businesses?

Definitely. Fibre is becoming increasingly common in residential settings — especially for larger properties, estates, or smart-home networks where performance and reliability matter most.
