Intruder Alarm FAQs

Here are answers to some of the most common questions we receive about Ajax intruder alarm systems, installation, and maintenance.

Do I need a wired or wireless Intruder Alarm?

Both wired and wireless burglar alarm systems are reliable, and the best choice usually depends on your property and how easy it is to install cables.
A wired alarm system connects all sensors, keypads and external sirens directly to the control panel using cables. The main advantage is that the devices do not rely on batteries, so there is no need for battery replacements. However, installing a wired intruder alarm can require running cables through walls, ceilings or under floors, which can involve more work in finished homes.
A wireless alarm system communicates using secure radio signals rather than cables. Wireless burglar alarms are usually quicker and less disruptive to install, which makes them ideal for homes that are already decorated or occupied. Modern wireless alarm batteries typically last 3–5 years, so maintenance is minimal.
If you are renovating or refurbishing your home, installing a wired alarm system can be a good option while access for cabling is available. If you already have an existing wired alarm system, upgrading the panel or devices while keeping the wiring can also be a practical solution.
If you're unsure whether a wired or wireless alarm system is best for your property, a professional survey can help determine the most suitable option.

Are Ajax Wireless Intruder Alarms reliable?

Yes, modern wireless alarm systems are extremely reliable. At Home Network Solutions, we install Ajax wireless alarm systems, which are designed specifically for professional security installations.

Ajax alarms communicate using secure, long-range radio technology rather than Wi-Fi, providing excellent signal range between the control panel and devices such as motion detectors, door sensors and keypads.

Ajax also includes advanced protection against signal interference or jamming. The system constantly monitors the radio environment and can detect if someone attempts to block the signal. If interference is detected, the system will alert users and the monitoring centre, helping ensure the alarm remains protected.

Because of this technology, a professionally installed Ajax wireless burglar alarm system is highly reliable and suitable for protecting homes and businesses.

Does my Intruder Alarm need an annual service?

In most cases, a modern wireless burglar alarm system does not require a mandatory annual service. Systems like Ajax alarms are designed to monitor their own performance and will notify you if any maintenance is needed.

Ajax devices constantly check their battery levels and system status. If a battery starts to run low, the Ajax app will send you a notification, giving you plenty of time to arrange a battery replacement.

Some customers still prefer to book an annual alarm service for peace of mind, which can include checking the system and replacing batteries. However, in many cases the batteries will still have plenty of life remaining, as Ajax device batteries typically last several years.

When a battery replacement is needed, we usually change all device batteries during the same visit. This helps avoid multiple call-outs and ensures the system continues to run reliably.

Ajax alarm devices use standard, readily available batteries, so if you prefer, it is also possible to replace them yourself.

Are there any subscriptions or maintenance fees with my Ajax intruder alarm?

No, Ajax intruder alarm systems do not require a subscription or monthly fee to operate. Once your system is installed, you can use the Ajax app and all core features without paying any ongoing charges.

We also do not require customers to take out a maintenance contract or service plan. Most domestic Ajax alarm systems run reliably for years with very little maintenance, and the system will notify you through the Ajax app if batteries or attention are required. If needed, we can carry out battery replacements or servicing on an as-required basis, rather than tying you into an ongoing contract.

For commercial premises, larger homes, or properties with higher security requirements, a maintenance plan can sometimes be beneficial. In these cases, scheduled servicing can help ensure the alarm system continues to operate at the highest level of reliability.

Overall, most homeowners choose an Ajax wireless burglar alarm system because it provides professional security without the need for ongoing subscription or maintenance fees.

Will my Ajax intruder alarm still work if the internet goes down?

Yes. Your Ajax intruder alarm system will continue to operate even if your internet connection fails.

The alarm system communicates directly between the hub and the sensors using secure wireless technology, so the alarm will still detect intrusions, trigger sirens, and protect your property locally even if the internet is unavailable.

The internet connection is mainly used for remote features, such as controlling the alarm through the Ajax app and receiving notifications on your phone.
If you have unreliable internet or would like additional resilience, we can install a SIM card in the Ajax hub. This provides a mobile data connection that automatically sends alerts and notifications if your main internet connection goes down.

As we are also a networking and connectivity provider, we can also supply and configure a secondary internet connection for your property. This can provide additional reliability not only for your alarm system but also for your wider home network.

How long will my Ajax Intruder Alarm batteries last?

In most cases, Ajax alarm system batteries last around 3–5 years. Ajax devices are designed to be very energy efficient, allowing wireless sensors and accessories to operate for several years before needing replacement.
However, battery life can vary depending on a few factors:
  • Distance from the hub – Devices located further from the control hub may use slightly more power to maintain a reliable connection.
  • Temperature – Devices installed outdoors, such as external sensors or sirens, may require batteries more frequently due to colder temperatures.
  • Level of activity – Sensors in busy areas may activate more often, which can reduce battery life slightly. For example, pet-friendly motion detectors will ignore pets but still register movement in the environment.
  • Device settings – Features such as external sirens with permanent LED flashing can increase battery usage.
The good news is that Ajax alarms constantly monitor battery levels. If a battery begins to run low, the Ajax app will notify you well in advance, giving you plenty of time to arrange a battery replacement.
When batteries do need replacing, we usually change them during a single visit to keep the system running reliably and avoid multiple call-outs.

Can I change my Ajax intruder alarm batteries myself?

Yes, you can replace the batteries in your Ajax intruder alarm system yourself if you wish. Ajax devices use standard, widely available battery types, so replacements are easy to source.

When changing alarm batteries, we recommend using a reliable brand such as Duracell to ensure the best performance and battery life. This helps maintain the long operating times that Ajax wireless alarm devices are designed for.

Most devices, such as motion detectors and door sensors, are easy to access and the batteries can usually be replaced in just a few minutes. However, some devices – particularly external sirens – are typically installed at height for security reasons, which can make them more difficult to reach.

External sirens also include anti-tamper protection. Before removing the cover or taking the siren down to change the batteries, make sure the tamper protection is disabled in the Ajax app to prevent the alarm from activating.

If you would prefer not to change them yourself, we are always happy to replace alarm batteries and check your intruder alarm system when required.

Will my intruder alarm still work during a power cut?

Yes. Ajax intruder alarm systems are designed to continue working during a power cut.

In a wireless Ajax system, the sensors and detectors are battery powered, so they will continue operating even if the mains electricity supply is interrupted.

The Ajax hub is normally powered from the mains, but it also includes an internal backup battery. If the power goes out, the hub will automatically switch to its battery so the alarm system continues to operate normally.

For wired alarm systems, the control panel (hub) also includes a backup battery, which keeps the system running during a power failure.

In the case of a very long power outage, the backup battery in the hub will eventually run down. However, under normal circumstances it will keep the alarm system operating for a significant period of time, helping ensure your property remains protected during temporary power cuts.

Will an Ajax intruder alarm meet my home insurance requirements?

Yes. Ajax intruder alarm systems are industry certified and are suitable for many insurance requirements when professionally installed.

If your insurer requires a professionally installed burglar alarm, Ajax systems can meet these requirements as they are designed to professional security standards and are widely used in both residential and commercial properties.

Insurance requirements can vary depending on the insurer and the level of security specified in your policy. If needed, we can help ensure the Ajax intruder alarm system is installed and configured to meet your insurer’s requirements.

If you are unsure what level of alarm system your insurer requires, it is always best to check your policy or contact them directly before installation.

Can I control my Ajax intruder alarm from my phone?

Yes, absolutely. Ajax intruder alarm systems can be fully controlled from your smartphone using the Ajax app.

The Ajax mobile app is one of the most intuitive alarm system apps available and allows you to control your alarm from anywhere. You can easily arm or disarm your alarm remotely, check system status, and receive instant notifications if the alarm is triggered.

For example, if you forget to set your alarm when leaving home or while on holiday, you can simply open the app and arm the system from your phone.
The Ajax app also makes it easy to manage users and access. If you have a visitor, cleaner, or family member who needs access, you can quickly create a temporary access code directly in the app without needing to be at the property.

This remote control and flexibility is one of the main reasons many homeowners choose an Ajax wireless intruder alarm system.

Can multiple users control the Ajax intruder alarm from their phones?

Yes. Multiple users can have access to the Ajax intruder alarm system through the Ajax app. This allows family members, staff, or trusted individuals to control and monitor the alarm from their own smartphones.

The system allows one or more administrators who can add or remove users and manage their permissions. This makes it easy to control who can arm or disarm the alarm and who receives notifications.

Adding a new user is simple. They just need to install the Ajax app, create an account, and provide the email address used for their account to the system administrator, who can then grant them access to the alarm.

If you would prefer, we are also happy to add additional users for you during installation or afterwards if you need assistance.

Can I part set my Ajax Intruder Alarm?

Yes, Ajax intruder alarm systems can be part set, allowing you to arm only certain areas of your property while leaving others disarmed.

A common example is night-time protection, where you may want the ground floor sensors active while you are upstairs. In this case, we can configure the system so that a part set activates only the chosen detectors, such as ground floor motion sensors and door contacts.

For larger homes or commercial properties, the system can also be configured with separate zones or groups. This allows different areas of the building to be armed or disarmed independently, providing flexible security depending on how the property is being used.

Ajax keypads include a dedicated part set button, making it quick and easy to choose the type of arming you want. You can also part set your alarm directly from the Ajax app on your phone, giving you full control wherever you are.

Will my pets trigger my intruder alarm?

No, Ajax motion sensors are designed to be pet tolerant, meaning normal household pets will not trigger the alarm.

Ajax PIR motion detectors use intelligent motion analysis to distinguish between human movement and smaller animals. This allows pets such as cats and small to medium-sized dogs to move around the property without setting off the alarm.

During installation, we carefully position and configure the sensors to ensure the pet immunity features work correctly, helping to prevent false alarms while maintaining reliable security.

If you have larger pets or multiple animals, we can advise on the best sensor placement and configuration to ensure your Ajax intruder alarm system works effectively for your home.

Are Ajax Intruder Alarms Chinese?

No, Ajax alarm systems are not Chinese. Ajax Systems is a Ukrainian security technology manufacturer known for developing advanced wireless intruder alarm systems used in homes and businesses around the world.

Although Ajax is relatively new compared to some long-established alarm manufacturers, the company has quickly become one of the most recognised brands in modern security systems. Their approach has helped move the industry forward by focusing on reliable wireless technology, long battery life, and an excellent user experience.

Ajax devices are also known for their clean, modern design, making them more aesthetically pleasing than many traditional alarm sensors while still delivering professional-level security.

Another key advantage is the Ajax mobile app, which provides intuitive control of the alarm system, instant notifications, and easy management of users and devices.

Despite the war in Ukraine, Ajax has continued to operate successfully by relocating staff and production facilities where necessary and using secure cloud infrastructure hosted in multiple European data centres. This ensures Ajax alarm systems remain stable and reliable for users worldwide.

We have been installing Ajax intruder alarm systems for over six years and have found the equipment to be extremely reliable. Today, Ajax is widely regarded as one of the leading wireless intruder alarm systems available.
